If you’re not making people mad, you’re doing it wrong.

Wise words I heard the other day: If you aren’t pissing people off, you’re doing something wrong.

The world is a crowded place. It can be hard to stand out over other people. With limited jobs and opportunities for almost everything in life, standing out from the crowd can be one of the best ways to get noticed. Although, it is much easier said than done.

The other day in class my professor spoke those wise words you see above. These words resonated with me. One of the best ways to stand out in life is to do something dramatically different. Something wild and crazy that has never been done before. Something that will turn heads.

Well, in order to do such a thing, you ‘re probably going to have to step on some peoples’ toes. It’s a fact of life. Everyone has different viewpoints and as a result, everyone will have different opinions. So when you go ahead and try something that hasn’t been done before, you’re bound to upset some people here and there. Sometimes this may be intentional and other times it may just be a side effect. If you truly want to stand out, sometimes taking risks can be a great way to accomplish that.

So, back to the essence of the statement: it’s ok to make some people mad. Its important to note: I’m not saying go out and steal a car. That will certainly make people mad, but it will also certainly land you in jail. Make sure you have a purpose and make sure your final intentions are good.

For example, check out this ad for the country of Israel.

Obviously it was bound to upset some people with the obvious use of sex throughout the ad. But it’s also the type of ad that stands out and makes an impression. For the majority of  people who may see this ad, it probably completely changes the image you have in your head of Israel, therefore accomplishing its goal. It’s simply a side effect that a small minority of people may be offended by it. If it were just another tourism ad that was ho-hum, no one would remember it and it would’ve blended in just like everything else.

This advice can apply to any situation or any field in life. It also may be somewhat controversial and I’m sure some people won’t agree with me, but hey, that’s what it’s all about here at WNS.

Do something different, turn heads, cause a ruckus, and create a buzz with whatever you do in life.

  1. Great ad! You’re exactly right. Nothing like what I would have expected from Israel. Definitely makes a statement.
