This dude knows how to put on a show.
The many months of waiting finally paid off. Since early August, I had known I would be seeing Macklemore live at school for our fall concert. When I first heard the news I was overjoyed. Except, there was one problem. I only knew 2 of his songs. To fix this, I quickly purchased and downloaded his album “The Heist” and listened to it on repeat for many hours on my flight to Europe this summer.
I. Loved. It.
Everyone knows of his hits Thrift Shop and Can’t Hold Us, but who knew the rest of his album was equally as good? Each and every song on the album has a strong and positive central message. They are all carefully crafted and equally as catchy. Songs like Wing$ and Make the Money are some of the most meaningful on the album. Each song had a message to deliver and each song did so in a meaningful way. There were also a fair share of less serious songs on the album that are equally as enjoyable to listen to such as Castle and White Walls. Needless to say, the album is outstanding. If you haven’t given it a full run through yet, get on that.
As far as the live performance went, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis absolutely killed it. The stage energy was fantastic as Macklemore ran about the stage fist pumping here and dancing over there. The crowd roared whenever he slipped in the word “Syracuse” throughout his songs songs. At one point, he even created an elaborate story involving the famously polluted Onondaga Lake and how he had gone skinny dipping earlier in the day. He rocked the crowd in an orange Syracuse jersey and made numerous wardrobe changes throughout his set. Mary Lambert (from Same Love) and Wanz (from Can’t Hold Us) were both on stage as well when their respective songs came on. This was a surprise to me as I was simply respecting recordings of their voices. Their live presence made the show even better.
He played numerous songs from “The Heist” as well as some older songs. My favorite song from the whole night was Irish Celebration. Many people don’t know this song, but it is EASILY one of his best. If you haven’t heard it yet, watch the video below. ESPECIALLY, if you’re some part Irish. The song kicks ass.
If you ever have the chance to see Macklmore perform live, do not pass it up. He was easily one of the best performers I have ever seen. Even if you aren’t a fan of his music, I promise you’ll still be entertained.
A + effort by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.
You guys killed it.
